Cardinals Eclipse Eagles on Senior Day

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata softball team dropped a pair of important Landmark Conference games to the visiting Catholic University of America, 6-1 and 3-1, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at West End Field.

The Cardinals struck early in game one, capitalizing on an Eagle error to open the scoring, 1-0.

An RBI on a groundout to second, an RBI triple, and a sac fly to right field put the Eagles in a 4-0 hole after two innings.

Another run-scoring triple in the third made it 5-0.

Claire Thomas got one back for the Eagles when she blasted a ball over the fence in left-center for her fifth home run of the year.

The Cardinals tacked another run in the seventh with an RBI to center.

In game two, Juniata fell behind again in the first inning, as the Cardinals scored twice on a two-run double down the left-field line.

From there, Kenzie Tapias exchanged zeros with the Catholic starter for several innings.

Gracie Ruch entered in the fifth with runners at first and second and 0 outs. She induced two groundouts to short, with the runners advancing on both, so a run crossed on the second groundout. A flyout to center ended the inning.

In the seventh, Morgan Brumbaugh doubled to right center, and Caleigh Love scored all the way from first, just beating the catcher's tag. JC couldn't find two more runs and lost 3-1.

The two losses mean Catholic pulls even with the Eagles in the standings, so Juniata is currently the third seed heading into the Landmark Postseason Tournament.

So Juniata will face Catholic next Friday to begin the Landmark Conference Softball Championship. The game time is TBD.
