Eagles Take Two From Rangers

Eagles Take Two From Rangers

MADISON, N.J.- The Juniata softball team picked up a pair of victories as they won game one 3-0 before winning in extras 7-5 in the nine innings, Friday afternoon at the Drew Softball Complex.

In game one, the pitchers traded zeros through the first four innings, with Cate Baran having some work to do in the fourth as the Rangers got a runner to third with one out. Baran struck out the next two batters looking to get out of the inning.

Reagan Goldsmith drew a one-out walk in the fifth and, after Baran struck out, stole second. Alex Douglass singled up the middle and got to second to push Goldsmith to third. Alison Superka clobbered a double to left center to give Juniata a 2-0 lead.

In the seventh, the Eagles added an insurance run. Baran lined a triple to center, and Madison Wrightstone came in to pinch-run and scored on Douglass's groundout.

That was more than enough as Baran when 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the seventh to get JC the win. Baran tossed 7.0 innings while allowing three hits and striking out six. Douglass went 1-3 with a RBI and a run scored, while Superka went 1-3 with a double, two RBI, and a walk. Baran went 2-4 with a triple.

Game two featured more offense, with Superka putting the Eagles on the board first with a RBI single through the left side that scored Baran.

The Rangers tied things up in the bottom of the second when they scored on a passed ball. A RBI single to center saw them take their first lead of the day, 2-1.

With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Abby John singled up the middle to score Kay Magill, Emily Eutsey, and Claire Thomas

In the seventh, Douglass smacked a one-out double down the left field line and got to third on a throwing error. Superka scored her with a sacrifice fly to left to give Juniata a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The Rangers countered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning as they scored three runs on two hits and two Eagle errors.

After a scoreless eighth, the Eagles got to work in the ninth. Baran led off with a double to center, and Douglass's bunt single sent her to third. Superka grounded out to second, which allowed Baran to cross home plate. Two batters later, Thomas walked, and Eutsey reached safely on an error by the second baseman, which allowed Douglass to score.

A 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning cemented the Eagle sweep.

It is the first time the Eagles have swept Drew since 2015.

The Eagles will return home to take on Susquehanna next Saturday at 1:00.
