Miller, Superka Lead Eagles to Win in Game Two at Drew

Superka

MADISON, N.J.- The Juniata softball team dropped a tough 3-2 decision before escaping game two with a 4-2 victory Saturday afternoon at the Drew Softball Complex.

Juniata scored first in the top of the third, with Cate Baran (Tyrone, Pa. / Tyrone Area HS) singling to right. Two batters later, Maya McLeod (San Diego, Calif. / La Jolla Country Day School) belted a double to left to make it 1-0. The Rangers knotted things back up at 1-1 with a sac bunt.

Drew capitalized on two Eagle errors in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-1.

Madison Wrightstone (York Haven, Pa. / Northeastern H.S.) pinch-hit to start the sixth and lined a double to left. McCloud singled, and Wrightstone got to third before they executed a double steal to make it 3-2. The Eagles couldn't find a way to get on base the rest of the game, as the next six batters were retired as Drew won game one.

In game two, the Eagles did all their damage in the third. Wrightstone led off with a single and got to second on a passed ball. McCloud's grounder got her to third, and she scored as Maggie Peck (Philipsburg, Pa. / Philipsburg Osceola) reached safely on an error by the third basewoman. Peck stole second before advancing to third on an error by the catcher, and she scored on a wild pitch. Alaney Vereshack (Smokerun, Pa. / Glendale) walked, and Alison Superka (Orefield, Pa. / Parkland HS) KO'd a ball over the left-field fence to double the Eagle lead.

The Rangers got one back in the third, scoring on a wild pitch.

Drew looked like they may send the game to extra innings, as with two outs, they had runners at second and third. They knocked in one run with a single and then stole second. The next batter hit a ball at Ruthie Betts (Hawk Run, Pa. / West Branch Area Jr./Sr. H.S.), who juggled the ball for a moment before rifling it over to first to get the final out and get the win.

Catherine Miller (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon Area) got the win for JC. She went 7.0 innings while allowing six hits, two runs crossed the plate, and struck out one batter. She added two hits as well.

Juniata will host Drew tomorrow. The first pitch is at 1:00.
