Cardinals Soar Past Eagles to Open the Series

Cardinals Soar Past Eagles to Open the Series

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata softball team lost a pair of games to visiting Catholic, 5-2 and 10-3, Saturday afternoon at West End Field.

Juniata struck first in the bottom of the second Caleigh Love (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury HS) singled to right-center and Maggie Peck (Philipsburg, Pa. / Philipsburg Osceola) reached on a fielder's choice. Love wound up taking third on a wild pitch before scoring on an error by the third basewoman.

In the bottom of the sixth, Alison Superka (Orefield, Pa. / Parkland HS) drove in Reagan Goldsmith (Middletown, Del. / Middletown) with a sac fly to left to double the Eagle lead.

The Cardinals waited until the last inning, but they did plenty of damage as they pushed five across the place. They scored on a sac fly, back-to-back doubles with one being of the two-run variety, and an RBI- single to center. Juniata couldn't muster a comeback in the bottom half of the seventh as Catholic took game one.

Game two saw the Cardinals get off to a quick start as they put up three runs in the second on a two-run RBI single to right-center and a double to left-center to make it 3-0. An RBI-double down the leftfield line made it 4-0 midway through the third.

In the bottom half of the inning, Alaney Vereshack (Smokerun, Pa. / Glendale) sent Madison Wrightstone (York Haven, Pa. / Northeastern H.S.) home with a double to left, and later in the inning Superka scored Vereshack with a single to make it 4-2.

The Cardinals dashed any thoughts of a comeback with a five-run sixth to make it 9-2.

Goldsmith's sac bunt scored Love in the bottom half of the sixth to complete the scoring.

Juniata will finish their series with Catholic on Monday. The first pitch is at 3:00.
