Softball takes two off PSU Berks and Wentworth

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. – Juniata College softball pounded out a combined 21 runs on 33 hits on its way to a pair of wins on day two of its spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C.  The Eagles notched an 11-3 win over Penn State Berks in game one of the twinbill, and followed up with a 10-1 win in six innings over Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Juniata (2-2) rallied from a 2-1 deficit against Penn State Berks with a five-run uprising in the fourth inning, keyed by Kelsea Decker's (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) two-run home run. Rachel Smith (Martinsburg, Pa.) doubled home two more runs later in the frame, and Paige Robertson (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) plated the Eagles' fifth run with the first of her two doubles of the day.

The two teams traded single runs in the sixth, with the Eagles scoring their marker on Robertson's double that plated Smith. Smith reached on a double earlier in the inning.

The Eagles tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh. Two of those crossed on Jen Ashcraft's (Bellefonte, Pa./State College Area) two-run single, with Smith and Robertson smacking two-out RBI singles to round out the scoring.

Decker fanned seven Berks batters while yielding three walks and three hits on her way to the complete game win, evening her record at 1-1. Penn State Berks' Raychel Dearmitt struck out seven Juniata batters, but surrendered 11 runs, 10 earned, on 19 Eagle hits.

Juniata closed out the twinbill with a win over Wentworth after again posting two big innings.

The Eagles put up four runs in the top of the second, thanks to RBI singles by Smith and Robertson and a two-out, two-run double by Meghan Decker (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro).

Juniata added five runs in the top of the sixth, with Wentworth unable to answer to force the game to end on the mercy rule.

Steph Frith (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) drove in the first Juniata run of the sixth when she singled home Smith, who got aboard with a leadoff walk. Katie Schroeder (Kempton, Pa./Kutztown) belted a two-out double to score the remaining three Eagle runs.

Smith scattered five Berks hits while striking out eight on her way to the complete game win. Wentworth starter Kelly Budzik allowed 10 runs, only five of which were earned, on 14 hits and three errors on her way to the loss.

Juniata will face Wesley College and Penn State New Kensington in a pair of games on Wednesday in Surfside Beach, S.C.
