Juniata Holds Off Goucher for Key Conference Victory

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata men's basketball team got a crucial win Wednesday night inside Memorial Gymnasium, winning 66-59 and keeping their conference playoff hopes alive. The win moves them to 14-10 overall and 7-6 in the Landmark Conference.

The Eagles were led by a breakout performance from freshman guard Mason Hardy (Gaithersburg, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel), who scored 13 points, going 3-4 from the field and 7-8 from the free throw line. He added four rebounds, three steals, and two assists, all coming off the bench. Chase Husted (DuBois, Pa. / DuBois Area) led the starters with 12 points, along with six rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Kohl Bernarding (Cochranton, Pa. / Cochranton) led the team in assists with four, while also scoring six points and snagging three rebounds.

The two offenses traded the lead for much of the first half, with the largest margin coming with 5:07 remaining in the half when Juniata led 26-20. It would narrow before halftime, and the Eagles took a 31-29 lead into the locker room. They began the second half with great momentum, scoring four unanswered field goals on two post layups from Husted and two jump shots from Evan Eisenhart (York, Pa. / Central York). Their largest lead of the game came at the 11:37 mark, when the gap widened to 13 on a Michael Montecalvo (Altoona, Pa. / Bishop Guilfoyle) made three-pointer.

Juniata would then suffer a scoring drought of nearly seven minutes, allowing Goucher to tie the game at 52 with 4:50 remaining. This would finally reignite the Eagle offense, and Hardy's excellent free throw shooting and dynamic energy on offense would allow Juniata to reclaim the lead and stave off the Gophers.

Juniata will travel to Moravian on Saturday for their final regular season contest, tipping off at 4:00 PM. A win there, or a Scranton loss vs. Catholic will clinch fourth place in the Landmark Conference and secure a postseason berth.
