Eagles Blank Blue Jays

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Juniata field hockey claimed their first Landmark Conference win of the 2022 season, as a second-quarter goal from Miranda Madara guided the Eagles past the visiting Elizabethtown Blue Jays in a 1-0 contest that saw just eight shots total.

Each team generated two penalty corners in the first ten minutes of the first quarter, and Madara forced a save from the Blue Jays' keeper in the 11th minute for the only shot of the quarter.

Elizabethtown earned a penalty corner in the opening moments of the second quarter, and a shot from five yards out was saved by Brittney McMullen.

The next shot of the game was the lone goal from Madara in the 22nd minute, as Sydney Witter directed the ball past the Elizabethtown goalkeeper, leaving Madara to guide the ball into the goal from a couple of yards out.

Madara put one more shot on goal in the 29th minute to force a save from Elizabethtown sending the Eagles into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.

The Juniata defense faced the strongest Elizabethtown offensive in the third quarter. McMullen made her second save in the 34th minute in a one-on-one scenario with a Blue Jays attacker. This was followed by two penalty corners, a team-blocked shot in the 37th minute, and another crucial save from McMullen in the same attack.

Immy Ramsdale fired her first career shot at the Elizabethtown keeper in the 41st minute for Juniata's only shot of the third quarter.

There were no clear goal-scoring chances in the fourth corner, as neither team was able to earn a shot or penalty corner.

McMullen earned her second shutout of the season thanks to three high-leverage saves and a Juniata defense that kept shots to a minimum.

Each team totaled just four shots across the hour, with Juniata putting all four shots on goal and Elizabethtown putting three shots on goal.

The Juniata field hockey team returns to play Wednesday, October 5, at 7:00 pm, as the Eagles host Lebanon Valley College. Juniata holds a 5-18 record against the Dutchmen and last won this matchup in a 3-2 overtime victory in 2018.
