Field Hockey Falls to TCNJ in Season Opener

EWING, NJ – The Juniata field hockey team opened their season against The College of New Jersey Saturday afternoon at TCNJ Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.

TCNJ got ahead early in the first period, scoring two goals. Nicole Piccioni (Richfield, Pa.am/ Midd-West HS) had 10 saves on the day, eight of them being in the first period.

Piccioni was put to work again in the second as the Lions put 18 shots on goal. The host team tacked on four goals to put them up by six. Brittney McMullen (Shape Gap, Pa./ Southern Huntingdon) took over between the posts during the second period for the Eagles and had six saves. 

Caroline Letrent (Princeton, NJ / Stuart County Day School of the Sacred Heart) relieved McMullen in goal to start the second half. Out of the three shots on goal, Letrent only allowed one past her, completing the scoring as the Lions got their seventh. 

The fourth and final period was scoreless, and the Juniata defense held the Lions to only six shots on frame. Hanne Scheel (Furlong, Pa./ Central Bucks West HS) took a shot, but it was blocked by the TCNJ defense. 

The Eagles return home for their home opener against Alvernia, Monday at 5:00 p.m.
