HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata baseball team picked up a pair of nonconference wins over Chatham, 16-9 and 11-8, Thursday afternoon at Langdon-Goodale field.
Joey Woodrow was 3-3 with a double and three runs scored in game one, while Zach Johnston was 1-3 with two RBI, a double and a run scored. Connor Rohm won; he pitched 5.0 innings and allowed one run on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
The Eagles exploded in the second inning, scoring ten runs on nine hits, highlighted by Corey Daniel's base-clearing double down the left-field line.
The Cougars got one back in the fourth, but the Eagles countered with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make it 12-1. Jordan Chui scored on a wild pitch to make it 13-1.
The Cougars had a big inning of their own, scoring eight runs on six hits as they took advantage of a pair of Eagle errors. They got within four, 13-9.
Juniata scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, and Logan Sigg and Jackson Cunnane drove in a run each to complete the scoring.
Harrison Leister went 1-2-3 in the seventh, including two strikeouts, to end game one.
The Eagles started strong offensively again. Daniels drove in two runs with a two-run single to right, and later in the first, Tyler Mack drove in two more to make it 4-0. Daniels stolen base in the inning was the 72nd of the season, breaking the program record for stolen bases in a season.
The Cougars made it 4-1 with an RBI single up the middle. In the bottom half of the inning, Johnston crushed a three-run bomb over the wall in centerfield. Daniels later smacked a triple to right center, and Charlie Bakken singled to left to plate Daniels, as the Eagles led 9-1. Woodrow's single midway through the inning was the 100th hit of his career.
The Cougars responded again with a big sixth, scoring six runs on six hits to make it 9-7.
Daniels provided insurance runs with a triple to right-center that scored Caden Collins and JR Harrison.
Chatham scored once in the seventh before Connor Krahulec induced a popup and a lineout to third. A fielder's choice ended the game as Tim Coleman flipped the ball to Chui to end it.
Daniels was 3-4 with five RBI, two triples, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Johnston went 2-3 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. Woodrow was 2-3 with two runs scored, while Mack was 1-2 with two RBI.
Juniata will travel to take on Lycoming for a doubleheader Sunday at 12:00 and 3:00.
