Juniata finishes 161st in Learfield Sports Directors Cup and fifth in Landmark All-Sports Cup

Juniata finishes 161st in Learfield Sports Directors Cup and fifth in Landmark All-Sports Cup

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata College finished narrowly outside the top third of all Division III athletics programs in the final standings for the 2011-12 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup, presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

Juniata finished tied with Trine University (Ind.) for 161st out of 436 Division III institutions. The Eagles earned 114.00 points in 2011-12, receiving points for Juniata’s finish in the women’s volleyball and women’s basketball NCAA Division III tournaments.

In the race for the Landmark Conference Presidents’ All-Sports Cup, Juniata finished fifth out of the conference’s eight teams. The Eagles captured the Landmark championship in women’s volleyball, while field hockey, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball all qualified for their respective Landmark tournaments.

Women’s swimming posted its highest finish in program history at the Landmark Conference meet, while both men’s and women’s track finished third at the Landmark outdoor championships.

“We’re proud of the success that our teams enjoyed in 2011-12, and to finish among the best programs in Division III is a huge achievement,” said Greg Curley, Juniata’s director of athletics. “However our goal remains to finish in the top half of the Landmark All-Sports Cup standings and to place among the top 25% of all athletics programs in Division III, and we clearly have work to do in this area. This year, our student-athletes achieved great things in the classroom and our goal as a department is make sure every Juniata student-athlete has the opportunity to achieve their athletic aspirations as well.”

NACDA and Learfield Sports present the Directors’ Cup to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA athletics. Points are awarded based solely on participation and finish at NCAA championship events.

The Landmark Presidents’ All-Sports Cup is awarded based on a formula that rewards institutions for their finish in the regular season standings, as well as Landmark post-season results. The formula also takes into account the number of sports a school sponsors, with teams earning points for their 15-highest point producing sports.
