Eagles Continue Conference Win Streak in 3-0 Sweep of the Gophers

HUNTINGDON, PA- The Juniata women's volleyball team extended their win streak to five in a row with a 3-0 sweep of the Goucher College Gophers on Friday evening.

In a key Landmark Conference matchup, the Gophers took six of the first ten points before the Eagles turned it on. A 7-0 run opened up their first real lead of the match, and ensuing 3-0 and 4-0 runs extended their lead to ten points, up 18-8. After two points went Goucher's way, the Eagles ended the set on another strong 7-0 run, taking set one 25-10. Isabelle Fekula clinched set point with a service ace.

Set two was arguably the Eagles strongest of the season, where Isabella Rushing served ten consecutive points for the Eagles after they dropped one point between that and an opening 7-1 run. Four of Rushing's ten serves were aces, and the Eagles were soaring. Set two ended 25-4 and in the same style as set one, with Fekula ending it on a service ace.

The third and final set opened heavily in Goucher's favor. The Gophers won nine of the first ten points. The Eagles took a timeout to reset and regroup, but the comeback began four points later. Down 3-11, the Eagles won eight of the next nine points, and later went on a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the set at 15-14. The Gophers had come back to tie the game twice at 17-17 and 18-18, but the Eagles finished the set in style again. Just as a 7-0 run opened the night for the Eagles, a 7-0 run closed it, and the Eagles took set three 25-18 for the 3-0 sweep. The final point came on a Sophia Repholz ace that dropped right in the back corner.

In the stats book, Molly Mishinkash led with 12 kills and Mari Hansen led with 20 assists. Rushing held a narrow edge in digs with seven while Fekula and Ava Castillo each added six.

Now 15-2 and 3-0 in conference play, the Eagles will continue with a conference matchup against The Catholic University of America tomorrow at 12:00 p.m., and a non-conference tie with Messiah University at 5:00 p.m. Both matches will be hosted by Juniata at the Kennedy Recreation Center Memorial Gymnasium.
