Eagles Disarm Knights

Morgan Edwards and Dejia Danhi

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's volleyball team opened Saturday with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-15) victory over visiting Arcadia on day two of the Wid Guisler Invitational Saturday afternoon.

With the score at 5-5 in the first set, Juniata pulled away with a 15-2 run that put them in the driver's seat. Two errors by the Knights, an ace from Aly Reardon (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown West HS), a kill from Emma Davis (East Berlin, Pa / Dover Area HS), another Arcadia attack error, a block from Dejia Danhi (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) and Davis followed by one from Danhi and Marie Gonsar (New Castle, Pa. / Shenango H.S.) made it 12-5. Arcadia took the next two points, but the Eagles just kept coming. Davis tallied another kill the Knights committed two more errors around an ace by Sophia Gingrich (Minneapolis, Minn. / Minneapolis Southwest H.S.). Arcadia called timeout but to no avail. Gingrich notched another ace; the Knights committed an attack error before a kill from Gonsar and a solo block by Davis ended the run. The Eagles wound up winning set one, 25-15 on a block from Danhi and Gonsar.

The second set of the match was tighter throughout as Arcadia led early and later pulled even at 17-17. A kill from Gonsar, a block by Danhi and Davis forced the Knights to quickly call timeout, but it couldn't quell the Juniata momentum. The Knights were called for a bad set, Reardon served up another ace and Gonsar smashed a kill to make it 23-17. The teams traded points to put the Eagles at set point, but the Knights took the next five to get within one, 24-23. Davis put down another kill to end set two for the host's, 25-23.

Juniata hit .458 in the third set as they held Arcadia to .065 hitting to cruise in the final set, 25-15 to take the win.

The Eagles will take on Randolph Macon at 6:00.
