HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's volleyball team locked down the Elizabethtown offense as they won, 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-15), Wednesday evening in Memorial Gymnasium.
The first set saw the Blue Jays lead 2-3 early prior the Eagles reeling off 10 straight. Victoria Taylor (Middletown, Del. / Delaware Military Academy) tied the score with her second kill of the match before the Blue Jays committed three straight errors and called timeout. Morgan Edwards (Lancaster, Pa. / Penn Manor) started things back up with a kill before combining with Dejia Danhi (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) on back to back blocks. Danhi and Taylor each tallied one more kill to make it 11-3. Juniata only added to their lead, with an ace from Emma Davis (East Berlin, Pa / Dover Area HS) giving the Eagles set point, and two points later a service error ended set one 25-11.
Elizabethtown hung around longer in the second set, capturing two straight points to make it 12-9. An error and a Davis ace helped open the Eagle lead back to five, and the teams traded points as the Eagles maintained their five-point lead at 19-14. Another kill from Davis, two straight aces from Marie Gonsar (New Castle, Pa. / Shenango H.S.), a kill from Abigail Luensmann (Altoona, Pa. / Bellwood-Antis H.S.) and an attack error by the visitors gave Juniata set point, 24-14. The Blue Jays took the next two, but another kill from Luensmann ended set two, 25-16.
The third set followed a similar script, with Juniata leading 15-12 midway through before mounting another run. This time, a block by Grace Erskine (Mooresville, N.C. / Community School of Davidson) and Brianne Carmody (Midlothian, Va. / James River), a kill from Erskine, an ace from Aly Reardon (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown West HS) and one more Davis kill made it 19-12. The Eagles ended the match with a 6-3 surge, with a kill from Carmody ending the match, 25-15.
The Eagles will host Franklin and Marshall, Friday at 7:00.
