Women's Swimming Competes at California Invitational

CALIFORNIA, Pa.- The Juniata women's swim team competed at the California Invitational held at California University of PA, Friday evening.

In the first event of the evening, the team of Gianna Canale (Egg Harbor City, N.J. / Cedar Creek High School), Cassie Sanidad (Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook), Alex Fontes (Plymouth, Mass. / Sturgis), and Maiya Mastovich (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop) came in with a time of 1:54.76 in the 200 freestyle relay. In the 400 IM, Kendra White (Jersey Shore, Pa. / Jersey Shore Area Senior H.S.) claimed the top spot with a time of 5:14.72. White finished eighth while Canale finished 11th in the 500 freestyle. 

In the 100 breaststroke, the Eagles took the top two spots. Sanidad came in with a time of 1:14.64 while Tabi Dettelback (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater Raritan) finished with a time of 1:14.96. Fontes finished fourth in the event with a time of 1:19. Dettelback finished fifth in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall at 2:24.26. 

In the 100 freestyle, Sanidad finished 13th (1:01.36), Canale finished 14th (1:02.77), and Mastovich finished 18th (1:07.96). Fontes came in third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:28.07. The Eagles took third place in the 400 medley relay. The quartet of Dettelback, Sanidad, Fontes, and White came in with a time of 4:33.59. 

Day two of the California Invitational has been cancelled due to the state of emergency. Juniata will return to the pool for Landmark Championships on February 15th.
