Eagles Fall to Goucher and Scranton on Senior Day

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's swim team fell to Goucher and Scranton on senior day.

The Eagles started out the meet strong with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of Tabi Dettelback (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater Raritan), Cassie Sanidad (Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook), Alex Fontes (Plymouth, Mass. / Sturgis), and Maiya Mastovich (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop) clocked in at 2:14.54, two seconds ahead of the third place Scranton team. Juniata kept their momentum in the 800 freestyle, with a first place finish from Kendra White (Jersey Shore, Pa. / Jersey Shore Area Senior H.S.) coming in with a time of 10:18.45. White finished 30 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. 

In the 100 backstroke, Dettelback finished second, just one second behind Scranton clocking in at 1:11.80. In the 100 breaststroke, Sanidad finished second with a time of 1:23.76. Fontes dominated the 200 butterfly, out touching second place 11 seconds. She finished with a time of 2:37.47. 

After the break, Gianna Canale (Egg Harbor City, N.J. / Cedar Creek High School) took fifth in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall at 1:11.73. Dettelback claimed the top spot in the 200 backstroke as she touched the wall at 2:36.56, five seconds ahead of second place. Sanidad had another strong swim as she earned first in the 200 breastroke, clocking in at 3:04.60. Fontes finished in second just one second behind Sanidad, coming in with a time of 3:05.67. 

White took second in the 400 free, as she came in with a time of 4:59.47. Fontes finished second by a small margin in the 100 butterfly, she finished with a time of 1:10.98. Dettelback claimed the second spot while, White claimed fourth in the 200 IM. In the final event of the day, the quartet of Sanidad, White, Mastovich, and Canale came in fourth in the 200 freestyle relay. 

"Our ladies had some great swims. The freshmen competed well and our upperclassmen went their fastest in our home pool. I was proud of the effort and will be looking forward to be traveling to Penn St.-Altoona next weekend," said head Nathan Smith.

The team final scores were as follows: 

Scranton 170. Juniata 76

Goucher 129. Juniata 114

Lauren Bryne of Scranton broke the previous Juniata pool record of 2:12.14. Byrne clocked in at 2:11.89 to take first place. 

The Eagles will host DII Kutztown next Saturday, November 10th. The meet will begin at 1:00 PM.
