JC Falls in a Well-Fought, Overtime Battle Against McDaniel

THE HEADLINE: McDaniel scores in the second overtime to defeat the Eagles 2-1 in their last non-conference game of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED: McDaniel got on the board first, scoring in the 14th minute on a shot from the top of the box. The Eagles and the Green Terror played even, marking one shot each, until the 30th minute when Juniata knotted the game at one. Steven Stroup (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) put the ball in front of the goal and a McDaniel defender knocked it in.

Still tied at one, the Green Terror threatened in the second half with nine shots. However, between four saves from Ben Forgas (Manassas, Va./C.D. Hylton) and one header save by Pedro Basaca (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) by the net, Juniata did not let up a goal.

The Eagles earned five shot opportunities in the second half, but they were unable to capitalize on any of them, sending the game into overtime.

In the first overtime, Juniata came out strong, as Dani Meyer-Arrivillaga (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends) took three shots in the first five minutes. Two of his shots landed wide and the other was saved by McDaniel's goalkeeper. Junior Matt Matylewicz tacked on one more shot on goal in the first overtime, but the Green Terror defense prevented a JC goal.

Despite a well-fought second half for Juniata, the Green Terror got passed the defense and scored in the 107th minute to win the game.

INSIDE THE BOX: Both teams marked 15 shots, 11 on goal. Meyer-Arrivillaga (6), Wyatt Page (3), Jarrod Gibson (2), Stroup (2), Tim Visser and Matylewicz contributed to the Eagles offense, while the defenders and Forgas kept McDaniel working.

BETWEEN THE POSTS: Forgas earned the start, tying his season-high seven saves. He saved two as the clock was winding down in the second half and one in the second overtime.

WHAT'S NEXT?: Senior day is the next, and last, home game for the Eagles on Saturday, Oct. 22 against Moravian at 3:30 p.m.
