The Eagles Earn First Conference Win Against Goucher

THE STORY: Juniata's men's soccer team earned their first conference win, as they defeated Goucher 3-1 on Saturday, Sept. 24.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Gophers were the first to strike, scoring in the 33rd minute. As the clock wound down in the first half, Steven Stroup (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) rocketed the ball down the field into the net to tie the game at one.

The Eagles took the control of the game in the second half. After taking four shots, Aaron Kulig (Green Lane, Pa./Boyertown) set up Dani Meyer-Arrivillaga (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends) to score from the far left wing in the 60th minute, giving Juniata the lead. Two minutes later, Jarrod Gibson (Abington, Pa./Abington) put one in, assisted by Wyatt Page (King of Prussia, Pa./Shipley), to put Juniata ahead 3-1.

BETWEEN THE POSTS: Freshman goalkeeper Logan Tackett (Herndon, Va./Herndon) earned the start today for the Eagles. He turned away seven of Goucher's ten shots on goal, five in the first half and two in the second half.

INSIDE THE BOX: Juniata and Goucher each took 14 shots each. The Eagles held the advantage in the second half, as they outshot Goucher 7-5. Meyer-Arrivillaga led the offense with six shots and four on goal. Stroup was behind him with three shots, all on goal.

POST-GAME REMARKS: "We've been working a lot of our style of play and it showed today. They fought for every ball," said Dan Dubios. He noted the determination of the senior leadership on the team. "Stroup, Meyer-Arrillivaga and Kulig had big games... and [it] rubs off on the younger guys."

Before the women's game, Juniata College recognized the donors of Winton Hill Athletics Complex, including Henry and Joan Gibbel. "It was a very exciting day, meeting the donors that gave to our field. I think our guys fed off of it."

THE RECORD: Juniata's win was their second of the season, moving to 2-7. Being the first conference game, the Eagles are now 1-0 in the Landmark Conference.
