HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's volleyball team earned their second sweep of the day as they beat Messiah, 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, 25-14), Saturday afternoon in the final match of the Juniata Invitational at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Eagles completely controlled the opening the set, as they hit .429 and cruised to 25-12 win.
The second set saw the Falcons jump ahead of the Eagles and lead by as many as eight points, with an Eagle service error making it 16-23. From that point, the Eagles didn't concede another point. Victoria Taylor (Middletown, Del. / Delaware Military Academy) put down two kills around a Moira Folan (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Oakland Catholic HS) ace and Messiah quickly called timeout, but to no avail. A block from Dejia Danhi (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) and a kill from Brianne Carmody (Midlothian, Va. / James River) made it 23-21 and the Falcons again called a timeout. A block from Taylor and Danhi followed by a solo block from Taylor tied the score. An attack error from the visitors gave JC set point and a block from Danhi and Carmody ended the set, 25-23, in favor of the Eagles.
Messiah led 5-7 early in the third, but Juniata shut down the idea of extending the match quickly, led by Taylor. A kill from Folan and another from Emma Davis (East Berlin, Pa / Dover Area HS) tied the score before Taylor and Davis combined for a block to give JC the lead back. Taylor followed with another solo block before notching three straight kills and a block assist, again with Davis to make it 13-7. Messiah got as close as four again, 15-11, prior to a bad set and a kill from Carmody along with a Danhi solo block opening the lead back to seven. Juniata took the final three points of the set on a Falcon service error and two more Taylor kills to win, 25-14.
Carmody made the all-tournament team for the Eagles.
