Women’s Volleyball Ends Regular Season With 3-1 Win Over Otterbein

ALLIANCE, OHIO- The Juniata women's volleyball team concluded its regular season with a match against Otterbein on Saturday afternoon. The two teams were tied at 1-1 but the Eagles came back to take the last two sets and win 3-1 (25-12, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20).

 

The Eagles had no problem with the Cardinals in the first set as they took it with little trouble. Juniata had a lead in the second set but Otterbein fought back to tie the frame at 12-12 and eventually took a one-point lead. The Cardinal advantage grew to as much as four points and they were able to hold off the Eagles in the end to tie the match at one set each.

 

Otterbein led 9-8 in set three but Juniata went ahead with a 9-2 run and led 17-11. Still holding to a six-point lead at 21-15, JC scored four points down the stretch to win 25-15 and go ahead 2-1 in the match.

 

The Eagles scored the first four points in the fourth set and went up 7-2. The Cardinals fought their way back in and trailed 9-8 but an 8-3 JC run broke the set open and put the Eagles up 17-11. Otterbein was able to close to 22-20 but kills by Brittanie Tannenbaum (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) and Marybeth Weihbrecht (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) along with an Otterbein attack error gave the Eagle the set and match win.

 

Leading the offense was Megan Moroney (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) with 14 kills and a .462 hitting percentage. Mar-Jana Phillips (Carson, Calif./Rolling Hills Prep) added 10 kills with Weihbrecht contributing nine kills. Both players had a presence on the defensive side as Phillips tallied four block assists and Weihbrecht six block assists. Three players reached double figures in digs led by Katie Byrne's (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) 19. Shaina Robinett (Westchester, Pa./Pa Leadership Charter School) had 14 with Glen Brumm (Oro Valley, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro) and Kelly Reynolds adding 11 and Korin Koehler (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) chipping in eight. Reynolds finished with 39 assists.

 

Next for Juniata is the Landmark Conference semifinals this Wednesday night. The Eagles take on Scranton with start time slated for 7:00 p.m.
