HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's volleyball team hosted Johns Hopkins on Friday night at Memorial Gymnasium. The Eagles took care of the Blue Jays 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-20).

 

Leading the offense for JC was Megan Moroney (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) with 14 kills and a .520 hitting percentage. Nakita Gearhart (Waynesboro, Pa/Greencastle-Antrim) added 11 kills and hit .500 on the night. Glen Brumm (Oro Valley, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro) and Suzanne Gloeckler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) both chipped in eight kills each. Kelly Reynolds (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) put up 39 assists.

 

Defensively, Katie Byrne (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) tallied 15 digs. Reynolds contributed 11 digs. Gearhart totaled six digs.

 

Juniata had a 3-0 lead to begin the first set and led early on. The Blue Jays were able to tie the frame at 12-12 following a kill from Ally Hirsch. The Eagles tacked on three points to go up 15-12 and was able to keep Johns Hopkins from rallying back.

 

JC went up 11-6 in the second set. Johns Hopkins was able to get to within one point, 14-13, but Juniata was able to expand its lead to 24-18 and after a service error by Brumm, Moroney's kill gave the Eagles the set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

 

The Blue Jays had a big start to the third frame as they led 6-2 early on. The lead grew to 9-5 but the Eagles rallied to tie it all up at 12-12 and then went ahead 15-12. Johns Hopkins could only get as close as two points to tie as Juniata scored the final four points to take the set and the match.

 

The Eagles will host the third round of Landmark competition on Saturday. The Eagles play Goucher at 11:00 a.m. and conclude the day with Catholic at 6:30 p.m.
