Juniata Stunned in 3-0 Loss to Emory

ATLANTA, GA –The top two women's volleyball teams in the country battled in the most anticipated match of the 2015 Emory Invitational Friday night. No.2 Emory handed No.1 Juniata their second loss of the season with a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-13, 25-14). This is the first time Juniata had been swept in 2015.

Both teams now hold overall records of 28-2.

Emory's fans packed the Woodruff PE Center and created an environment that stifled Juniata.

EU led by as many as 13 points in the first set before taking a 25-14 victory. They would take control of the second set in a similar fashion, going on a 10-3 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Juniata had been down two sets to none on an opponent's court just one other time this season. They rallied back against Wittenberg to take a 3-2 victory Sept. 5. This time, JC was unable to push back.

Emory first reached match point with a 24-10 lead in the third set. Juniata started a brief run and put together four points in a row but ultimately, EU took the set and the match.

The all-time series record between the two teams is now tied at nine. The last time Juniata defeated Emory was in 2009 at the Washington and Lee Invitational. JC won the match 3-1.

Megan Moroney (Mentor, OH / Mentor) finished the match with eight kills, one solo block and one block assist. Mar-Jana Phillips (Carson, CA / Rolling Hills Preparatory) recorded five kills and one solo block.

Katie Byrne (Annapolis, MD / Broadneck) recorded Juniata's only service ace of the match. She finished the match with 12 digs and kept many points alive for JC.

Juniata concludes regular season play Sat. Oct. 31 against Washington and Lee University at 2pm.
