Women's Volleyball Defeats Bridgewater 3-1

HUNTINGDON, PA – The Juniata women's volleyball team (26-1, 7-0 Landmark) took a 3-1 victory (25-14,25-12, 23-25, 25-19) over the Bridgewater Eagles Saturday afternoon at the Wid Guisler Invitational.

Juniata began the match with a strong 6-0 lead that forced their opponents to call an early timeout. A dominating performance from JC resulted in a 25-14 victory in set one. 

Marybeth Weihbrecht (Mechanicsburg, PA / Cumberland Valley) led Juniata in set one with three kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Weihbrecht finished the match with 13 kills, two blocks and a .375 hitting percentage.

JC recorded five service aces and 12 kills collectively in set two on their way to a 25-12 victory. 

The third set would tell a different story for Juniata. JC would hold a 16-12 lead before three consecutive errors brought Bridgewater within a point. A timeout would leave Bridgewater un-phased as they went on to tie the match up at 18. Juniata would push back but Bridgewater took the set 25-23. 

In the fourth set, the score would be tied at 10 before Juniata began to pull away. A six-point run put them up 16-10 before they would take the set and the match with a 25-19 victory. 

Brittanie Tannenbaum (Highlands Ranch, CO / Highlands Ranch) led Juniata with 15 kills, three blocks and a .433 hitting percentage. 

Chelsea Scafuro (Geneva, OH / Geneva), Christine Irwin (State College, PA / State College) and Nakita Gearhart (Waynesboro, PA / Greencastle-Antrim) recorded two service aces each against Bridgewater. Irwin also picked up 15 digs and six kills. 

Katie Thomas (Batesville, IN / Batesville) recorded 34 assists, nine digs and three kills. 

Juniata faces Geneva College at 6pm to conclude the Wid Guisler Invitational. They will honor their seniors, Bryce Arnold (Shippensburg, PA / Shippensburg) and Kristin Collins (Freedom, PA / Ambridge) before the match.
