Eagles Blank Gophers for Landmark Season Sweep

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 10 Juniata College women's volleyball team completed the regular season sweep of Landmark Conference opponents, defeating Goucher College 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-14). The Eagles improved to 23-3 on the year and 5-0 in conference play.

 

Juniata put together another complete game team-effort, not allowing the Gophers to tally more than 20 points in each of the three sets. Senior outside hitter Rachelle Wiegand (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) gave another strong performance, raining down a match-high 11 kills off a .360 average.

 

Senior Sarah McCarthy (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) had a match-high 36 assists and led the Eagles defense with 11 digs. Junior Brittani Young (Columbia, Pa./Hepfield Area) and Wiegand rounded out the top defensive play for Juniata with eight and seven digs respectively.

 

Overall, the Eagles hit for an impressive .422 team average and notched an outstanding 15 service aces. The number marks the second-highest team total for aces on the year. Junior Christine Sumner (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) equaled a career-high with five aces in the match. Freshmen Suzanne Gloekler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) and Brittanie Tannenbaum (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) each added three aces.

 

The Eagles have secured the number one seed in the Landmark Conference tournament with the full schedule set to be released on Wednesday Oct. 23. Juniata next returns home to host the annual Wid Guisler tournament Oct. 25-26.
