Juniata Women’s Volleyball Hosts Geneva for Annual Dig Pink Event

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – After a 3-1 weekend at the Christopher Newport Invitational, the No. 7 Juniata College women's volleyball team will face Geneva College this Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. The match will mark the Eagles Fourth Annual Dig Pink event to help support the Side Out Foundation in their ongoing efforts to further breast cancer awareness, education, and patient services.

 

Juniata is 15-1 in 2013 and is averaging 13.47 kills per set. Senior Amy Miller (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) earned Landmark Conference player of the week honors for her performance last week. The outside hitter is currently leading the team in service aces (19), and is averaging .39 aces per set. Junior Amelia Kepler (Kane, Pa./Kane Area) is pacing the Eagles in kills (161), and kills per set (3.66), and is hitting for a .261 attack percentage. Junior libero Brittani Young (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield Area) is anchoring the Juniata defense with 225 digs and an average 4.59 digs per set.

 

So far this season, the Eagles have dropped just eight sets and only suffered their first lost of the season to No. 17 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater last weekend. Prior to the start of conference play this weekend, the Eagles are standing at first in the league in hitting percentage (.262), kills per set (13.49), and assists per set (12.34). Juniata is second only to Merchant Marine Academy in service aces (120) and aces per set (2.26).

 

The Golden Tornados are 13-6 on the year and all six of their losses have been on the road. Geneva has amassed a perfect 7-0 record in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play and is averaging 11.9 kills per set and 17.8 digs per set. Senior outside hitter Ashley Davis is leading the Golden Tornados in kill (249), kills per set (4.02), attack percentage (.261), and points per set (4.63). Davis and senior setter Deanna Brody are tied for the team lead in aces with 26 apiece. Brody leads the team in assists per set (9.64) and is second in total digs (203) and digs per set (3.17). At the net, junior middle blocker Erin Smith is averaging a team high .88 blocks per set and leads Geneva in total blocks with 51.

 

The two programs have only met twice, with the Eagles getting the better of both matches. The Golden Tornados were last in Huntingdon in 2009 when Juniata prevailed 3-1 (25-10, 25-17, 23-25,25-18).
