Juniata trumps FDU-Florham but falls to Salisbury

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – No. 15 Juniata College women's volleyball took down FDU-Florham 3-0 in the opening match of the 2012 Juniata Invitational before falling hard in a 3-2 battle against No. 23 Salisbury.

Set scores for the match against the Devils were 25-12, 25-16, and 25-14. Set scores for the match versus the Seagulls were 25-21, 30-28, 18-25, 23-25, and 8-15.

Juniata's (9-5) offense was spread out against FDU-Florham (1-7) with Christine Sumner (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) leading the way with nine kills, just one kill shy of her season-high 10 kills in a four set win against Haverford. Eight additional Eagles registered at least one termination against the Devils, including five from Amelia Kepler (Kane, Pa./Kane Area), Bryce Arnold (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) and Karley Christian (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel). The squad combined for a .206 hitting percentage versus the Devils.

Sarah McCarthy (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) and Adena Deloizer (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Altoona Area) split time at setter with Deloizer assisting kills on 18 occasions and McCarthy registering 12. Delozier also served-up a season-high four aces across the three games.

Brittani Young (Columbia, Pa./Helpfield Area) was active on defense, as she sprawled for a team high 13 digs as part of a 49-dig performance from the Eagles.

In the loss to No. 23 Salisbury (16-1), Juniata amassed 60 kills as the squad hit for a .185 attack percentage. Kepler and Scholl led in kills with 12 apiece while Courtney Lydick (McKean, Pa./General McLane) and Kelsey Fuller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) each added 10.

Despite earning seven more kills than the Seagulls and hitting at a better percentage, the Eagles couldn't clinch the victory after winning sets one and two.

Four Eagles sprawled for more than 10 digs in the five-game match, Delozier (13), Fuller (19), Rachelle Wiegand (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) (11) and Young (14).

Juniata continues play at the Juniata Invite tomorrow, September 22, with matches against Franklin & Marshall and Carnegie Mellon.
