Women’s volleyball couldn’t overcome Wittenberg in 3-2 loss

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – No. 9 Juniata College women's volleyball was unable to overpower fifth place Wittenberg Friday night at Kennedy Sports and Recreation Center and suffered a 3-2 loss in Juniata's ASICS Invitational. 

Set scores for the match were 25-23, 25-19, 25-19, 25-19, and 15-10. 

In every set Juniata found itself trailing for the majority of the game, including the first and third sets that it won. In set one, Juniata didn't lead, with the exception of a one point lead to open the match, until it broke away with the score tied a 21 apiece. 

Juniata (5-1) was led in the offense by Catherine Scholl (Austin, Texas/St. Michael's Catholic Academy) with 11 kills on 26 total attacks for a .346 attack percentage, while senior Kelsey Fuller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) also hit double-digits with 10 kills and dug-out 14 digs. The Eagles managed a .133 attack percentage as a squad against the Tigers.

On the other side of the net, Wittenberg (4-0) had three hitters reach +10 kills, Kara Seidenstricker (17), Andrea Behling (13), and Jessica Batanian (14). The Tigers collectively hit at a .163 rate.

Brittani Young (Columbia, Pa./Helpfield Area) led in digs with 31, and junior setter Sarah McCarthy (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) turned-in 11, while also assisting on 18 occasions. McCarthy split time with freshman Adena Delozier (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Altoona Area) at setter, and Delozier recorded 17 assists.

In blocking, Christine Sumner (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) and Courtney Lydick (McKean, Pa./General McLane) each charted three and Amelia Kepler (Kane, Pa./Kane Area) had two block assists and the only Juniata solo block of the night.

Juniata will play another two tough matches tomorrow afternoon against No. 16 Puget Sound and No. 1 Christopher Newport as part of the ASICS Invitational at Kennedy S+RC.
