Juniata women's volleyball completes four-match sweep at Blue Jay Classic, defeating Haverford and E-town

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Juniata College women's volleyball completed a tournament sweep of the 2011 Days Inn Blue Jay Classic, defeating Haverford College and the host squad from Elizabethtown College both by 3-0 scores on Saturday at Elizabethtown College.

Juniata (10-4) downed Haverford in the morning by set scores of 25-12, 25-15, and 25-21, before disposing of the Blue Jays in the afternoon on set scores of 25-15, 25-12, and 25-18.

Kelsey Fuller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and Amanda Schmidt (Boswell, Pa./North Star) shouldered the offense for Juniata against Haverford, each finishing with nine kills while hitting for a high percentage. Fuller put down her nine against one error on 16 swings for a .500 hitting percentage, while Schmidt logged just two errors on 20 swings and hit .350 for the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Amy Miller (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) and sophomore middle Courtney Lydick (McKean, Pa./General McLane) each tallied five kills.

Lydick and Schmidt each had a pair of blocks, as Juniata outblocked Haverford, 4.0 to 3.0.

But it was at the service line and on defense where the Eagles had their greatest advantage over the Fords.

Juniata served up nine aces on Haverford, led by junior middle Ashley Schnader (Reinholds, Pa./Garden Spot) with four and freshman Amelia Kepler (Kane, Pa./Kane Area) with three. Defensively, Juniata had 46 digs to Haverford's 37, paced by senior libero Libby Morrison's (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) 14 digs. Fuller and Brittani Young (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield Area) each tallied eight digs.

Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) recorded 31 assists as Juniata hit. 323 for the match.

Haverford was led by Laura Ramos with eight kills on 20 swings, while Haley Lowrance and Olivia Coburn-Flynn each had four. Coburn-Flynn tacked on a pair of blocks, while Ramos sprawled for 14 digs.

Cat Scholl was Juniata's top offensive weapon in the Elizabethtown match, recording 10 kills on 18 attacks with only one error, translating to a .500 hitting percentage. Kepler tacked on eight kills, while Kelci Scannapieco (York, Pa./Eastern York) and Schmidt logged six apiece.

Juniata hit .342 against the Blue Jays, who struggled to get to a .122 hitting percentage. No Elizabethtown player recorded more than four kills against the Eagles, who had 59 digs to the Blue Jays' 43. Morrison finished with 25 digs, third most in a match this season.

Elizabethtown's one advantage was at the net, where the Blue Jays recorded 10 total team blocks. Lindsay Palm had a hand in four blocks, to go with her four kills.

Kepler took tournament MVP honors after finishing the tournament with a team high 25 kills and 33.5 points. She hit .308 over her 11 sets played, with seven aces and three blocks. Morrison also earned All-Tournament Team honors, recording 75 digs, 6.25 per set.

Juniata hosts the first Landmark Conference round robin weekend next Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2, at the Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center. All seven Landmark schools will be visiting Huntingdon for the weekend, with six matches on Saturday and five on Sunday taking place on two courts.
