Mount Union upends Lebanon Valley in first round of NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Tourney

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Mount Union College came out victorious with a 3-1 win over the Flying Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley College, in Thursday's first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship's Juniata Regional at the Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center.

After losing the first set 25-17, the Raiders turned it around to win 27-25, 25-23, and 25-12.

Although Mount Union (23-6) and Lebanon Valley (31-3) seemed to struggle to find their offensive groove, Purple Raider outside hitter Monica Hupertz helped lead her team to victory by racking up 10 kills on 23 attacks for a .391 attack percentage. Mount Union outside hitter Melissa Mahnke led all players in the match with 18 kills, but did so on 55 swings and finished with a .200 attack percentage for the match. Middle hitter Sarah Parker tacked on 12 kills for the Purple Raiders.

Purple Raider setter Katie Kmieck logged 51 of her team's 54 total assists, guiding a Mount Union offense that hit .222 as a team.

Middle hitter Joelle Synder also proved to be a key in the Flying Dutchmen offense with 16 kills out of 41 swings resulting in a .317 percentage. Outside hitter Michelle Little logged 11 kills for Lebanon Valley.

Mount Union's Sarah Dean ended the match with 25 digs, while Mahnke finished with 19. On the other side of the net, Lebanon Valley's Angela Kuperavage tallied 19 digs for the Dutchmen. Mount Union stopped Lebanon Valley defensively, turning up 91 digs over the four set match.

Mount Union moves on to play the winner of the Juniata College-Cabrini College first round match on Friday, Nov. 13, at 7:00 p.m.
