Women’s volleyball completes sweep of Wid Guisler with wins over NYU and Carnegie Mellon

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Juniata College women's volleyball team improved to 26-3 overall with a pair of 3-0 victories on Saturday in the 2008 Wid Guisler Invitational, at the Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center in Huntingdon, Pa.

Juniata opened the day with a 3-0 win over New York University, by set scores of 25-10, 25-16, and 25-8. The Eagles closed out the tournament with a straight-set victory over Carnegie Mellon University, 25-13, 25-11, and 25-13. 

Against the Violets, the Eagles were paced by Steph Strauss (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) and Cassie Dickmann (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) with seven kills each, with Strauss adding three points at the net on blocks and logging 14 assists. Megan Sollenberger (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had 18 digs with two service aces. Beth Kozak (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) tallied nine assists.

Amber Thomas (Ephrata, Pa./Conestoga Valley) and Dickmann paced Juniata offensively against the Tartans with 10 kills each. Paige Johnston (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) added another eight kills to the Eagle cause with a pair of blocks. Kozak set the offense with 21 assists.  Michelle Morchesky (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) led Juniata defensively with 14 digs, while Sollenberger added 13 digs.

Juniata continues its stretch of five games in five days on Monday evening when it travels to Altoona, Pa., to face Penn State-Altoona. Game time at Adler Gymnasium is slated for 7:00 p.m.
