Juniata WVB closes out regular season with wins over Lee and Birmingham-Southern

ATLANTA – The Juniata College women's volleyball team wrapped up its 2008 regular season with a pair of wins at the Emory National Challenge in Atlanta, defeating NAIA-member Lee University (Tenn.) 3-0, then dispatching Birmingham-Southern College, 3-2.

Set scores in the win over Lee were 25-15, 25-13, 25-18.

Amber Thomas (Ephrata, Pa./Conestoga Valley) recorded 13 kills in the win, while Megan Sollenberger (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had 18 digs.

Against Birmingham-Southern, set scores were 25-19, 21-25, 25-14, 18-25, and 15-10. Birmingham-Southern College is a Division I institution that is in the first year of a transition to Division III, and has scholarship student-athletes on its roster.

Thomas again led the Eagles with 23 kills, while Cassie Dickmann (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) had 17 kills. Steph Strauss (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) had four total blocks to go with 25 assists and four kills. Beth Kozak (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) tallied 29 assists on the night, and Megan Sollenberger recorded 21 digs, along with three service aces.

Collin Wallace (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) began the fifth set against the Panthers with a pair of service aces, setting the tone for the set.

"When we needed key side outs, we got them from Amber (Thomas) and Cassie (Dickmann)," said Juniata head coach Larry Bock. "We also got good stuff from Drew Barnhart (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) and Amanda Schmidt (Boswell, Pa./North Star); nothing that shows up in the boxscore as big numbers, but they did some key things. The youngsters had to come up big here with Erin Albert (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) out for the weekend, and they did."

Juniata (28-3, 6-0 Landmark) receives a bye in the first round of next week's Landmark Conference Tournament, and will host the final two rounds on Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center in Huntingdon, Pa.
