Women’s Track & Field Fourth After Day One of Championships

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Through six scored events at the 2014 Landmark Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the Juniata College women's track & field team sits in fourth place with 33 points. Moravian College leads the women's side after gathering 103 points throughout the first day of competition.

 

Senior Katrina Woods (Shirleysburg, Pa./Mount Union) was Juniata's top finisher on the day. Woods finished second in the 1500 meter run in a time of 4:42.75. Junior Alyssa Cousins (Lemont, Pa./State College Area) followed Woods to finish fifth.

 

In the 10,000 meter run, junior Courtney Peterson (York, Pa./Central York) crossed the line third to score points for the Eagles.

 

The Eagles also saw great success in the field events. In the hammer throw, junior Chelsey Beaver (Shamokin Dam, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) finished fourth overall with a season best throw of 35.74 meters. Sophomore Alissa Sellers (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) placed fifth overall in the long jump with a mark of 4.72 meters. In the javelin, junior Kylie Berrena (Petersburg, Pa./Juniata Valley) finished fifth and senior Janice Jackson (Roaring Spring, Pa./Canton) placed seventh to pick up points for the Eagles.

 

Senior Paula Pryor (Westbrookville, N.Y./Burke Catholic) finished 400 meter dash preliminary round in third place and will race in the finals on Sunday. She also qualified for the 200 meter dash final in fifth. In the 100 meter hurdle prelims, sophomore Erin Gaines (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport High School) qualified for the finals in eighth place.

 

The championship competition continues Sunday with field events beginning at 9 a.m. and track events starting at 11 a.m.
