Shaffer Named Landmark Senior Scholar Athlete

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Senior Angela Shaffer (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) has been named the Landmark Conference Senior Scholar Athlete for women's indoor track and field, the organization announced Thursday.  Honorees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and are selected based on academic and athletic accomplishments.  There were only six recognized for the winter season and Shaffer topped the list of all women's indoor track and field senior student-athletes.

"It's good that people recognize that she is gifted both academically and athletically and are rewarding her for her efforts," said track and field head coach Jon Cutright.   "It's a credit to the time she put into both areas."

Currently studying biology, Shaffer is the president of Beta Beta Beta, the national biology honor society.  She is a three-time Landmark academic honor roll member and has been placed on the Dean's List four times during her four years at Juniata.

Shaffer is an all-around athlete for the Eagles.  The only heptathlete on the roster, she competes in four track and three field events during the indoor season.  Shaffer is a four-time all-conference honoree, three-time Landmark high jump champion and two-time conference hurdle champion, winning the 55m hurdles in 2011 and 60m hurdles in 2013.

She has scored points at the Landmark Championships 15 times in four different events.  Her winning mark in the high jump during the 2013 indoor championships set a conference record. Shaffer owns the program record in the 60m hurdles, has the second-best high jump mark in program history and is among all-time program performance leaders in the long jump.

Over the course of her final indoor season, Shaffer won seven events and earned three second place finishes. She was also named conference field player of the week back on January 28 after winning both the triple and high jump at the Lebanon Valley Indoor Invite.  Shaffer has earned indoor player of the week honors four times in her career.
