HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The 2014 season came to an end today for the Juniata College women's tennis team as they fell 5-3 to the No. 1 seeded Royals of The University of Scranton in the Landmark Conference semifinals. The Eagles qualified for the league tournament as the No. 4 seed for the second year in a row and finish with an overall 11-6 record.
Juniata started out in a 2-1 hole after doubles play. Senior Megan Phillips (Jefferson Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) and junior Heather Waring (San Antonio, Texas / John Jay) earned the win at No. 1 doubles defeating Scranton's No. 1 doubles pair for the second time this season. The duo finished 16-8 on the year all from the top position. Sophomore Mitsuki Koh (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) and Tori Gray (York, Pa. / Central York) forced an extra game out of the No. 2 doubles match, but ultimately fell 8-6. The final doubles pairing of freshman Rachel Yurchisin (Cleveland, OH / Padua Franciscan) and junior Cara Stough (Friendsville, Md. / Northern Garrett) came up short with a 8-4 loss to finish the season 3-4.
Waring captured No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1, for a two-win day bringing the match score to 3-2 Scranton. Sophomore Jacklyn Renninger (Manheim, Pa. / Manheim Central) tied the match at 3-3 with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 6 position earning her 13th win of 2014. The Royals then captured No. 4 and No. 3 singles respectively to earn the 5-3 victory.
