Juniata Secures Final Playoff Spot with 5-4 Defeat of Goucher

TOWSON, Md. – On the final day of the Landmark Conference regular season, the Juniata College women's tennis team clinched back-to-back playoff appearances with a dramatic 5-4 win over Goucher College. In a rematch of the 2013 league semifinals, the Eagles earned the No. 4 seed in the league tournament and will face No. 1 The University of Scranton in Scranton, Pa. next Tuesday, April 22, at 3:30 p.m.

 

Goucher jumped out to the 2-1 lead after doubles play with the No. 2 pairing of sophomores Tori Gray (York, Pa. / Central York) and Mitsuki Koh (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) earning the win to finish the season with a 3-2 league record.

 

Senior Megan Phillips (Jefferson Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) grabbed the first singles match win for the Eagles with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at the No. 2 position. Freshman Rachel Yurchisin (Cleveland, OH / Padua Franciscan) also earned a straight set win with a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 3 for her fourth consecutive win. Gray captured her fifth win in a row taking No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-0 and sophomore Jacklyn Renninger (Manheim, Pa. / Manheim Central) clinched the victory and the playoff position with the 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 6 spot.

 

The Eagles are making their third playoff appearance since entering the Landmark. Juniata will finish out the regular season with a match up against Gettysburg College tomorrow, Friday April 18, at 3:30 p.m.
