Eagles Earn First Landmark Win, Sweep Susquehanna 9-0

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Juniata College women's tennis teams earned a number of first with the teams' 9-0 sweep of Susquehanna University Tuesday afternoon. The win was the first Landmark Conference victory for the Eagles in the 2014 season and also marked the first win for Juniata over Susquehanna in Huntingdon since the foundation of the league.

 

The Eagles opened the match with solid all-around doubles play. The No. 1 doubles pair of senior Megan Phillips (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and junior Heather Waring (San Antonio, Tx./John Jay) earned the ninth dual match victory of the season and improved to 4-0 in league action. Playing on barrowed strings, Waring earned the victory at No. 1 singles claiming her sixth singles win of the year and leveling out her league-match-record at 2-2. Phillips battled back from a second set loss at the No. 2 position to claim the third set 6-3 and take her match 2-1.

 

Sophomore Mitsuki Koh (Cupertino Calif./Monta Vista) and classmate Tori Gray (York, Pa./Central York) claimed their first Landmark victory of the year, winning No. 2 doubles 8-2. The pair improved to 11-7 with the win and is currently riding a three-match win streak. Koh clinched the contest for the Eagles with her straight sets victory at No. 4 singles. She is now 3-1 in league matches and has won back-to-back singles after a victory against York College last Sunday. Gray improved to 2-2 in Landmark with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 5 position. She has won three consecutive matches and stands at 11-4 overall on the year.

 

The tandem of freshman Rachel Yurchisin (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) and sophomore Jacklyn Renninger (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) nabbed the final doubles win for Juniata. The pair took the No. 3 position 8-4 for the 13th win of the season, first in Landmark matches, and the early 3-0 Juniata lead. Yurchisin earned the first singles win of the day for the Eagles with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 and junior Cara Stough (Friendsville, Md./Northern Garrett) claimed the final victory of the day for Juniata with a 6-2, 6-1 No. 6 win for her third triumph of 2014.

 

The Eagles improve to 9-4 overall, 1-3 in Landmark play, and will host non-conference Stevenson University Friday, April 11, at 3:30 p.m. Juniata will then welcome Drew University to town for a Landmark matchup on senior day, Saturday April 12, at 1 p.m.
