HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Juniata College women's tennis team pounded out a 9-0 sweep for Lycoming College in the 2014 home opener with the entire match lasting just over two hours. The Eagles bounced back from a loss at Catholic University of America last weekend to improve to 7-1 on the year.
Juniata opened with a quick and dominating 8-0 win by sophomores Tori Gray (York, Pa./Central York) and Mitsuki Koh (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) at the No. 2 doubles position. The duo rebounded from an 8-6 loss at Catholic to improve to 8-5 on the year. The No. 1 pairing of junior Heather Waring (San Antonio, Tx./John Jay) and senior Megan Phillips (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) captured the second win of the day claiming the top doubles match 8-1.
Freshman Rachel Yurchisin (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) and sophomore Jacklyn Renninger (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) capped off doubles with the 8-3 win at No. 3. Phillips was the first off the court in singles play storming through No. 3 singles for the 6-1, 6-0 win. Right behind her was Koh who won No. 4 singles without dropping a game.
Waring became the second Eagle to win 6-0, 6-0 taking the No. 1 position and freshman Samantha Hendricks (McVeytown, Pa./Mifflin County) earned her third win of the season, improving to 3-0, in clean-sweep fashion at No. 6. Yurchisin rounded out the top singles positions with a 6-0, 6-2 performance at No. 2. Juniata gathered around the final match to watch Gray finish out the day with a 6-0, 6-1 win improving to 7-3 this year.
The Eagles will hit the road for a mid-week match at Messiah College next Tuesday before returning home Saturday, March 29, at 1 p.m. to host Landmark Conference opponent Moravian College.
