WASHINGTON, D.C. – After a 5-0 start to the week while on spring break in Hilton Head, S.C., the Juniata College women's tennis team returned north to open the Landmark Conference season at Catholic University of America. The Eagles fell to the Cardinals 5-4 for their first dual match loss of the year.
Senior Megan Phillips (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) came back from a set down to win at No. 3 singles for her fifth win this week. She teamed up with junior Heather Waring (San Antonio, Texas/John Jay) at No. 1 doubles for Juniata's lone pair win, taking the match 8-4.
Sophomore Mitsuki Koh (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) gave a strong performance at No. 5 singles only dropping one game for the 6-1, 6-0 win. Koh and fellow sophomore Tori Gray (York, Pa./Central York) suffered a tight 8-6 loss at No. 2 doubles to finish the week 3-3.
Fellow sophomore Jacklyn Renninger (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) had the fourth win of the day for the Eagles, taking No. 6 singles after a hard-fought 6-4 first set and a dominant 6-0 second. Renninger and doubles partner freshman Rachel Yurchisin (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Fransican) suffered just their second loss in doubles play, 8-6, and their first since the Oberlin Invite back in September of 2013.
Juniata will open its 2014 home season this Wed., March 19, at 3:30 p.m. against Lycoming College.
