BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Juniata women's tennis team moved to 12-4 overall and 2-2 in the Landmark Conference after a victory over the Greyhounds of Moravian, Saturday afternoon. The Eagles have been road warriors in 2012-13, having won all over their matches away from home. This win marked their sixth road victory thus far.
This match proved to be the Eagles' closest contest so far in Jason Cohen's first full season as head coach. After winning two out of three matches in doubles play the Eagles battled back and forth with the Greyhounds all afternoon. Especially integral in Juniata's 5-4 win were junior Megan Phillips (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and freshman Tori Gray (York, Pa./Central York).
Phillips found herself in a hard-fought match in the No. 2 position after she split the first two sets with her opponent. Eventually, the lone upperclassmen put away the win with a third set, 6-4 victory. The biggest win on the day came from Gray, however. With the Eagles and Moravian tied at 4-4 overall, Gray put the match away with a gritty three-set victory. Having fallen behind after the first set, Gray battled back to win the last two sets 6-4, 6-4. Behind Gray's tough victory, the Eagles earned their twelfth victory.
The Eagles will look for their fourth straight victory in their postponed match against Susquehanna. As it stands, the Eagles lead Susquehanna 2-1 overall. The singles play will resume at 12 pm on the Sunday, April 14th.
