Women's Swimming Earns Best Finish Ever at Landmark Championships

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's swim team took fourth in virtual Landmark Championships this weekend.

Due to unprecedented times, the 2021 Landmark Conference Championship meet was held virtually at each of the the four schools. Catholic University took first with 535 points, The University of Scranton came in second with 441 points, Drew University came in third with 417 points, and Juniata College finished fourth with 271 points. The meet will finish next weekend with the schools that offer diving. 

Juniata also honored seniors, Alex Fontes (Plymouth, Mass. / Sturgis) and Cassie Sanidad (Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook) before the final session on Saturday. 

Fontes became Juniata's first indiviual champion as she took first in the 200 butterfly. Fontes clocked in at 2:11.37 and will be named to the Landmark All-Confernence first team. 

In the 500 freestyle, Kendra White (Jersey Shore, Pa. / Jersey Shore Area Senior H.S.) took second place as she touched the wall at 5:23.82. White's second place earns her a spot on the Landmark All-Conference second team. Also in the 500 free, Emma Sprowls (Coal Center, Pa. / California Area HS) finished 12th with a time of 5:49.81, Gianna Canale (Egg Harbor City, N.J. / Cedar Creek High School) finished 14th with a time of 6:01.33, and Emma Pinto (Washington, N.J. / Warren Hills Regional HS) finished 16th with a time of 6:28.79. White then took second in the 400 IM to earn another spot on the Landmark All-Conference team. She touched the wall at 4:54.26. 

In the 100 butterfly, Fontes touched the wall with a time of 59.90 to claim second place. Fontes was named to the Landmark All-Conference second team for her finish. Kristen Miller (York, Pa. / Dallastown Area HS) finished 11th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:06.59. Canale placed tenth in the 200 freestyle as she touched the wall at 2:13.31. In the 1650 freestyle, White placed fifth with a time of 18:54.71 while Pinto finished eighth coming in with a time of 23:05.24. 

In the 200 IM, Sanidad finished seventh (2:21.18), Tabi Dettelback (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater Raritan) finished 11th (2:23.13), Miller finished 16th (2:33.64) and Emma Mumau (Somerset, Pa. / Somerset HS) finished 17th (2:33.67). 

In the 100 breaststroke, Fontes (1:11.30), Sanidad (1:12.44), Shaju (1:15.20), Sprowls (1:17.51), Mumau (1:19.34), and Goetz (1:32.52) placed fourth, sixth, seventh, tenth, 11th, and 14th, respectively. In the 100 backstroke, Dettelback took ninth with a time of 1:04.20 while Pinto finished 16th with a time of 1:16.63, Alegria Garcia (Alta Loma, Calif / Homeschool) finished 17th with a time of 1:20.82, and Shannon Thoma (Churchville, Pa./William Tennent HS) finished 18th with a time of 1:23.65. 

The Eagles placed 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd in the 50 freestyle. Sharon Shaju (India / Heritage Experiential Learning School) clocked in at 27.81, Thoma clocked in at 29.18, Sarene Goetz  (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Barack Obama Academy of International Studies) clocked in at 29.77, and Garcia clocked in at 29.80. In the 200 backstroke, Dettelback finished 11th (2:19.18), Canale finished 13th (2:32.28), and Thoma finished 14th (2:58.99). In the 100 freestyle, Goetz took 16th clocking in at 1:06.75 and Garcia finished 17th with a time of 1:07.02. 

In the 200 breaststroke, Sanidad placed fourth with a time of 2:37.71, Shaju placed sixth with a time of 2:40.27, Mumau finished eighth with a time of 2:46.85, and Sprowls finished ninth with a time of 2:47.56. 

The team of Dettelback, Sanidad, Fontes, and Miller took fourth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:55.23. Fontes, Sprowls, Dettelback, and White also took fourth in the 800 freestyle relay clocking in at 8:28.25. In the 200 freestyle relay, Sanidad, Sprowls, White, and Miller finished fourth coming in with a time of 1:47.72. The Eagles placed third in the 400 medley relay. The quartet of Dettelback, Sanidad, Fontes, and White finished with a time of 4:16.64. In the 400 freestyle relay, White, Sprowls, Sanidad, and Fontes placed fourth with a time of 3:58.06.
