Women's Swimming Takes Down Penn St.-Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa.- The Juniata women's swim team defeated Penn St.-Altoona, 102-39, Friday.

The meet started off with a Juniata win in the 200 medley relay. The team of Tabi Dettelback (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater Raritan), Cassie Sanidad (Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook), Alex Fontes (Plymouth, Mass. / Sturgis), and Maiya Mastovich (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop) clocked in at 2:02.72. The 1000 free saw, Gianna Canale (Egg Harbor City, N.J. / Cedar Creek High School) take first place coming in with a time of 13:31.07. Kendra White  (Jersey Shore, Pa. / Jersey Shore Area Senior H.S.) took first place in the 200 free, as she touched the wall at 2:13.89, eleven seconds ahead of her opponent. 

In the 50 free, Mastovich finished second, coming in with a time of 30.01. In the 100 IM, two Eagles took the top spots as Dettelback (1:06.65) claimed first while Sanidad (1:09.50) took second. Fontes narrowly out touched the Lions in the 100 fly, clocking in at 1:03.41. Another close finish for the Eagles in the 100 free, as Canale claimed first, coming in with a time of 1:04.56. Dettelback took the top spot in the 100 back, coming in with a time of 1:05.73. 

In the 500 free, White out touched the second place finisher by 30 seconds. She finished with a time of 5:53.52. In the 100 breaststroke, Sanidad finished first coming in with a time of 1:16.23. In the final event of the meet, the team of White, Canale, Fontes, and Mastovich took first clocking in at 4:17.39. 

"Our ladies swam well after tough training this week. Alex Fontes and Maiya Mastovich put up in season bests and our freshmen performed well. This group is just going to keep getting better. We're excited to compete against Kutztown tomorrow," said head coach, Nathan Smith. 

The team returns to action tomorrow, November 10th as they will host DII Kutztown University at 1:00 PM.
