Fontes Takes First in 100 Butterfly, but Eagles Fall to Marywood on Senior Day

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata men's and women's swim teams fell to Marywood University on senior day, Saturday afternoon. The Eagles honored three seniors, Krista Peachey, Emily Angeline, and Stephen Lane. 

Alex Fontes (Plymouth, Mass. / Sturgis) was the only Eagle of the day to take first place, she finished with a 1:12.52 in the 100 butterfly. She also had strong finishes in the 200 butterfly and 200 breastroke taking second place in both events. 

The meet started off strong when Marywood just narrowly out touched the Eagle's 200 medley relay by two seconds. The team of Krista Peachey (Hummelstown, Pa. / Lower Dauphin), Meghan Brubaker (Lancaster, Pa. / Lampeter-Strasburg), Fontes, and Emily Angeline (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin East) came in second with a time of 2:21.65. Angeline finished third in the 800 freestyle, with a time of 11:46.00. In the next individual event, Brubaker took second place in the 200 freestyle. 

In the 100 backstroke, Peachey took third place, coming in with a time of 1:20.01. In the 200 butterfly, Fontes took second place for the Eagles finishing with a time of 2:41.73. Peachey was the top finisher for the Eagles in the 50 freestyle, she came in third finishing with a time of 32.29. Danielle Ochs (Huntingdon, Pa. / Juniata Valley) and Eliis Irv (Hampshire, England / Havant) took fifth and sixth places respectively in the 50 freestyle. 

Ochs and Irv again finished one behind the other in the 100 freestyle finishing fourth and fifth respectively. In the 200 backstroke, Peachey came in third place finishing with a time of 2:58.57. Fontes finished strong in the 200 breastroke finishing just short of first place and beating out the third place finisher by .10 of a second. Angeline took fourth place in the 400 freestyle.  

In the final individual event of the day, Brubaker finished in fourth place in the 200 IM coming in with a time of 2:56.47. Lastly, the quartet of Angeline, Brubaker, Ochs, and Irv took third place in the 200 freestyle relay. 

On the men's side, Jackson Hoch (Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle) finished just two seconds behind a Marywood swimmer in the 200 freestyle. In the 100 breastroke, Martin Berger (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon Area) took third place (1:20.82). Berger was the top finisher in the 50 freestyle for the Eagles coming in third while Stephen Lane (Three Springs, Pa. / Southern Huntingdon) took fourth place. Hoch finished in a close third in the 100 freestyle as he finished just two seconds behind the second place finisher. In the 400 freestyle, Hoch again finished in third place coming in with a time of 5:06.62. In the final individual event of the day, Berger finished in third place in the 200 IM coming in with a time of 2:42.61.

Juniata women: 47          Marywood women: 196

Juniata men: 21              Marywood men: 167

The Eagles will return to the pool on February 16th for Landmark Championships held at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center.
