Swimming Opens Season Against Mauraders

HUNTINGDON, PA – The Juniata women's swim team fell 63-135 to the Millersville Mauraders in the season opener in Binder Nataturium.

The Eagles finished the meet with two first place finishes.

Jocelyn Skelly (Hershey, PA / Hershey High School) took the victory in the 100m butterfly with a time of 1:11.02 while Tzvia Cahn (San Jose, CA / Kehila Jewish) took the top spot in the 50m free at 29.24 seconds.

"The team swam very well today," head coach Nathan Smith said. "The upperclassmen had some solid swims for the first meet of the year and the underclassmen performed even better. The sophomore class had a lot of races that were faster than any they swam last season in our pool. The freshmen had some good debuts as well."

Three sophomores reached in-season bests against the Mauraders. Emily Angeline (Harrisburg, PA / Central Dauphin East) finished the 400m free at 5:25.10 and picked up a point for the Eagles.

Elizabeth Hainsworth (Glade Spring, VA / Patrick Henry) picked up two bests. In the 400m freestyle, Hainsworth finished with a time of 5:08.45. She took second place in the 200m free at 2:21.43.

Rounding out the in-season bests from the sophomore class is Hannah Shumway (Slippery Rock, PA / Slippery Rock). Shumway took second in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:16.73. She finished at 2:53.95 in the 200m IM.

Senior Caitlin McCann (Chevy Chase, MD / Bethesda Chevy Chase) recorded an in-season best in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:27.89 and a third place finish.

Juniata gets a two-week break before their next meet. The Eagles head to Chatham University on Oct. 31 at 12:00pm.
