Women’s Swimming Competes at Landmark Conference Championships

GERMANTOWN, Md., Juniata College's women's swimming team competed in the Landmark Conference Championships this weekend. The championship meet was held Friday, the 13th through the 15th in Germantown, Maryland. Preliminary swimming events began at 10 a.m. each morning. Finals started at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 5 p.m. on Sunday. The 1,650 freestyle races took place at 1:30 p.m. today. The meet concluded this evening with the senior ceremony at 4:30, followed by the finals at 5, and the award ceremony afterwards (FULL SCHEDULE).

 

This year, the women's team finished 8th with 170 points. In Friday's events, Tzvia Cahn (San Pedro, CA / Kehilia Jewish)Meghan Swavely (Hummelstown, PA / Palmyra)Krista Peachey (Hummelstown, PA / Lower Dauphin)Ellie Hainsworth (Glade Spring, MD / Patrick Henry) placed 6th in the 200 yard free style relay. Hainsworth placed 11th in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle. Cahn later finished 10th in the 50 yard freestyle at 25.30. Krista and sister Alyssa Peachey (Hummelstown, PA / Lower Dauphin) finished 13th and 14th in the 200-yard butterfly. 

Cahn, Swavely, Caitlin McCann (Chevy Chase, MD / Bethesda-Chevy Chase), and Hannah Shumway (Slippery Rock, PA / Slippery Rock) placed 7th in the 200 and 400-yard medley relay. Swavely and Cahn came in 11th and 12th respectively in the 100-yard butterfly. The two were 13th and 14th in the 100-yard freestyle. McCann was among the top-20 in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke. The team placed 7th overall in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 8:36.68.

 

Coach Nate Smith was excited for his team and said after the meet, "We got to see results of a full year of development from our freshman swimmers and the continued development of our older ones. The team performed well with many swimming lifetime bests." He added, "I'm proud of what they were able to accomplish this season. They faced adversity and pretty big odds with a positive attitude. I am proud of what they did this weeked. I'm looking forward to the future. I know we an accomplish a great deal."
