Juniata Defeats Goucher in First Landmark Meet of the Season

SCRANTON, Pa. – Juniata women's swimming team won four events at their meet against Goucher College and the University of Scranton Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles fell to the Royals 155-86, but defeated the Gophers 138-110. Juniata also grabbed five second place finishes at the meet.

 

Senior Hillary Palmer (Fayetteville, Ga./Fayette County) paced the Eagles with two individual wins. Palmer placed first in the 100 free and the 200 IM with times of 57.60 and 2:21.41, respectively. The senior also clocked in second in the 100 back in 1:04.90. Freshman Erika Fimple (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) captured one win of her own. Fimple won the 200 fly in 2:20.06, which landed her third on Juniata's all-time list in the event. She also placed second in the 100 fly (1:04.08).

 

In the last event of the day, the 200 freestyle relay picked up a win in an exciting race. The team comprised of Fimple, junior Meghan Swavely (Hummelstown, Pa./Palmyra), sophomore Tzvia Cahn (San Jose, Calif./Kehilla Jewish), and sophomore Emily Nye (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) edged out the second place team by just 0.74 seconds.

 

There was a handful of other swimmers who placed second or third in their respective events. Sophomore Chrissy Whiteman (Delmont, Pa./Franklin Regional) finished second in the 500 free (5:47.71), and Nye placed second in the 50 free (25.70).

 

The Eagles take a week off from competition before heading to the Swarthmore Invitational on Friday, Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m. The meet continues on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 9:30 a.m.
