Women’s swimming moves up to fifth after day two at Landmark meet

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Juniata College women's swimming team found points in six out of seven swimming events and moved up to fifth place through two days of competition at the 2012 Landmark Conference Swimming & Diving Championships, Saturday at the Marywood Aquatic Center.

Juniata finished the day with 242 points, trailing fourth-place Catholic University with 285 points. The University of Scranton remained in first place with 490 points, followed by Susquehanna University (475 points), and the United States Merchant Marine Academy (326.50 points).

The Eagles are ahead of Marywood University (203 points), Drew University (178 points) and Goucher College (128.50 points) in the team standings.

Kathryn Viola (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) had Juniata's top individual finish of the day, placing fourth in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:09.38.

The Eagles recorded a four-five finish in the 100 Backstroke, with Hillary Palmer (Fayetteville, Ga./Fayette County) touching the wall fourth with a time of 1:02.31 while Falon Snyder (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) was fifth in a time of 1:02.90.

Kelsey Miles (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) also turned in a fifth place finish in the 200 Freestyle with a mark of 1:59.53.

In the relay events, the Juniata team of Miles, Viola, Shayna King (Easton, Pa./Easton Area), and Snyder were fourth in the day's final event, the 800 Free Relay, with a time of 8:14.40 – nearly 16 seconds faster than their seed time.  The Eagles opened the day with a fifth place finish in the 200 Medley Relay, as Mary Kate Meingossner (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Viola, Meghan Swavely (Hummelstown, Pa./Palmyra), and Palmer logged a time of 1:55.87.

The Landmark meet wraps up on Sunday, Feb. 12, with preliminaries starting at 10:30 a.m. and finals beginning at approximately 6:00 p.m.
