HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Women's swimming opened its 2011-12 season by defeating Marywood University, 117-87, while dropping a 113.5-85.5 decision to Millersville University at Binder Natatorium Friday evening.

The Eagles started the meet with a second place finish in the 200-meter medley relay. Freshman Mary Kate Meingossner (Landsdale, Pa./North Penn), sophomore Kathryn Viola (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East), freshman Alyssa Peachey (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin), and freshman Kim Proenca (Thorton, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) swam for a combined time of 2:15.40.

Viola not only helped significantly in the medley relay by swimming the backstroke leg, but she also took first in the 100-meter breaststroke race earning Juniata nine points with a time of 1:21.34.

Meingossner was the top Juniata finisher and placed second in the 100-meter backstroke with a 1:13.14 time to earn the Eagles four points in her collegiate debut.

Sophomore Kelsey Miles (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) earned a total of thirteen points for Juniata, including four for placing second in the 200 freestyle at 2:20.56, and nine points for taking first in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:05.90.

Sophomore Hillary Palmer (Fayetteville, Ga./Fayette County) certainly made a splash in her first collegiate meet, as she was the top Juniata finisher in the 50-meter free at 29.57 and placed fourth in the 100-meter backstroke at 1:15.06. However, Palmer saved her best race for last as she swam anchor in the 200-meter freestyle relay and posted a 29.38 time, the fastest time of any Juniata swimmer in the race, to help the Eagles clinch first place and seal the win over Marywood.

In addition to Palmer, Miles, sophomore Falon Snyder (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) and freshman Meghan Swavely (Hummelstown, Pa./Palmyra) also swam in the 200-meter freestyle relay and charted a combined time of 2:00.14 to clinch first by just under .90.
