Eagles, Gophers Even in Scoreless Draw

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's soccer team drew, 0-0, with the visiting Gophers of Goucher, Saturday afternoon at Gibbel Stadium. 

In the opening 15 minutes, shots from Fiona McDonald (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy)Talia Bertrando (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick High School) and Meadow Walshaw-Wertz (Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) all tested the Goucher keeper, but she saved each shot. 

In the 26th minute, Wynter Adams (Houtzdale, Pa. / Moshannon Valley) won the ball near the Gopher 18, dribbled in and managed to round the keeper before her shot attempt was just off the mark. Maya Browning (Boulder, Colo. / Fairview) and Brooke Emge (Waynesboro, Pa. / Shalom Christian Academy) tested the keeper later in the half, but again the Goucher keeper was able to keep the shots out.  

Kristin Racis (Womelsdorf, Pa. / Conrad Weiser) made two saves in the first half as the teams went to the locker rooms tied 0-0 at the half. Juniata held an 8-3 edge in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.  

The second half was more balanced as Goucher outshot Juniata 10-7 in the second period. Racis made three stops to keep the scoreline at zero. Juniata only managed to get two of their seven opportunities on target in the second half. The teams remained deadlocked, so they went into extra time. 

Racis was busy early in the first extra period as she made two stops inside the first two minutes. Brooke Rotheram (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin East) had the only Eagle shot in the first extra time period, but the Goucher keeper managed to keep it out. Neither team could find a winner, so a final 10 minutes were played.

In the opening minute of the half, Caroline Braas (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township) got the ball in the middle of the boxed and blasted a shot towards goal, but it was high. 

In the dying seconds of the match, a Goucher forward blasted a ball from outside the box that smashed off the top corner of the crossbar as the final horn sounded. 

Juniata returns to action, Wednesday against Susquehanna at 7:00.
