Juniata Comes Up Short in First Conference Game

Juniata Comes Up Short in First Conference Game

THE STORY: The Juniata Eagles fell in their first conference game of the season against the Goucher Gophers on Saturday, Sept. 24. Despite the Eagles' relentless play, the Gophers' one goal decided the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED: After a scoreless, even first half, Goucher netted one from the top of the box to get on the board in the 66th minute.

SAVING THE GAME: Goalkeeper Erin Mueller (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) recorded three saves on the Gophers' four shots on goal. Goucher's goalkeeper kept the Gophers in the game with seven saves and a 1.000 save percentage on the day. After Goucher took the lead, Juniata threatened in front of the goal. However, their goalkeeper turned the Eagles away with two saves in five seconds on shots by Anna Kauffman (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) and Taylor Garraffa (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg).

INSIDE THE BOX: The Eagles tallied eight shots with seven shots on goal. Kauffman and Jessica Zavadak led the offense with two shots, both on goal. Devin Kos (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area), Kristin Racis (Womseldorf, Pa./Conrad Webster), and Garraffa followed with one shot on goal each.

The Gophers were only allowed three shots in the first half and two in the second, while the Eagles took four shots in each half.

THE RECORD: The Eagles now sit at 3-3-2 on the season and 0-1 in the Landmark Conference. Goucher advanced to 5-2-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

WHAT'S NEXT?: The women's soccer team will travel to St. Vincent on Tuesday, Sept. 27 for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
