WINCHESTER, VA. – The Juniata women's soccer team traveled to Winchester, Va. for a Saturday afternoon match with Shenandoah University. The Eagles fell to the Hornets 2-0.

Junior goalkeeper Kerry Leonard (Cockeysville, Md./ Maryvale Prep.) recorded eight saves, two within the first two minutes of play. She successfully turned away four shots in the first period until one snuck through in the 41st minute. Leonard saved one more in the 42nd minute to keep the game 1-0 at halftime.

In the 57th minute, Leonard blocked yet another shot. Shortly after, Shenandoah's Emily Yergin scored on an "incredible strike from a terrible angle," according to Juniata's head coach Scott McKenzie. Olivia Claycomb (Saxton, Pa./Tussey Mountain) and Wynter Adams (Houtzdale, Pa./Moshannon Valley) each attempted on-target shots in the second half, however, neither were able to get by the Hornets' goalkeeper.

Shenandoah out-shot Juniata 15-7 in the contest with ten shots on goals. There were a total of five corner kicks in the game with JC holding a 3-2 advantage.

Coach McKenzie said, after an even first half, Shenandoah "saw Juniata a little more on [their] heels. They can take a lot from this game and I am very proud of the women today."

The Eagles face the University of Pitt--Bradford in their home-opener on Wednesday, September 7 at 3:00 PM. It will be the first contest at the newly built Gibbel Stadium.
