Late Goals from Spartans Result in 0-2 Loss for Eagles

YORK, PA – After 84 minutes of scoreless play, York (PA) would score two goals a minute apart to take a 2-0 victory of the Juniata women's soccer team Wednesday afternoon.

Following the first goal, the Eagles were pushing hard to get an equalizer. They were ahead on the field but Emily Huey would send a rocket just under the crossbar to put the Spartans up 2-0.

"York is a top 100 team in the power rankings," head coach Scott McKenzie said. "We played very well overall and it was a pretty even match that just got away from us."

The second half almost began with a goal from Kristen Behrens (Jonestown, PA / Lebanon Catholic) that could've changed the tempo of the game. Behrens drove the ball to the goal and unleashed a rocket. York's keeper Kate Lutte would be knocked back into the goal on the shot. Lutte's body awareness was key for the Spartans and even though her shoulders went past the goal line, her hands and the ball did not so she was credited with the save.

Kerry Leonard (Cockeysville, MD / Maryvale Prep) got the start in goal for Juniata. Leonard played the first half and made three saves with zero goals allowed. She has now recorded over 250 scoreless minutes straight between the posts.

Erin Mueller (Bedford, PA / Bedford) played the second half of the game. She made six saves and was strong in goal for the Eagles.

Juniata's leading goal-scorer Anna Kauffman (Palmyra, PA / Palmyra Area) was contained by the Spartan's defense and held to just one shot.

"We held on to the ball a little longer than we should've in front of the goal," McKenzie said. "There are a lot of good lessons we can take from this game into Saturday's game against Drew."

The Eagles begin Landmark Conference play Sat. Sept. 26 at the home of the Drew Rangers at 4pm.
